The Indian Maharaja

DAY 01 (WED) ARRIVE AT MUMBAI
Welcome aboard a fascinating journey of India! We commence at 16:00 hrs from Victoria Terminus, also known as Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus.

The financial capital of India, Mumbai is also known for its film and television industry, Bollywood, and is a land of many communities and cultures.

After the check-in process is over, the Coach Butler would take your baggage in his custody until transferring them onto your designated Cabin.

Once onboard and, in the cozy confines of your Cabins, we leave Mumbai behind us for an overnight journey towards Aurangabad.

This evening you could familiarize yourself with the layout of the train, especially with the location of the Spa, Restaurants and the Bar.
Enjoy a sumptuous dinner onboard.

DAY 02 (THU) AURANGABAD
Wake up to a golden dawn at Chalisgaon, near Aurangabad, where you will take in the sights of ancient art and architecture through the forenoon.

The city of Aurangabad was founded by Malik Ambar in 1610. It received its current name in 1653 when Aurangzeb made it the capital of the Deccan.

The Ellora Caves, a World Heritage site, are carved into the side of a basaltic hill 30 km from Aurangabad. The finest specimens of cave-temple architecture, they encompass 34 rock-cut shrines representing Buddhist, Jain and Hindu art dating from the 4th to 5th century AD. The 12 caves to the south are Buddhist, the 17 in the centre Hindu, and the 5 caves to the north are Jain. The most remarkable is the Kailash temple, meant to be a replica of Shiva’s celestial abode at Mt. Kailash. It is the best example of rock cut architecture and an engineering marvel.

You would then return to Aurangabad from where you can hop back on board The Indian Maharaja.

Lunch on board.

In the evening we then depart for an overnight journey to Jalgaon, now a bustling industrial town and a convenient jump-off point for the Ajanta Caves. Dinner on board.

DAY 03 (FRI) AURANGABAD
After Breakfast on board, we will take you to visit Ajanta Caves, another World Heritage site and an architectural marvel for its time. The 30 rock-hewn Buddhist caves at Ajanta have been masterfully carved and are adorned with sculptures and frescoes, portraying in epic form the religious and secular life through eight centuries. Many of the caves house panels depicting stories from the Jatakas, Buddha’s previous births etc.

We then catch up with the Indian Maharaja at the Jalgaon railway station.

Lunch on board.

The day ends with a splendid dinner on board as we travel overnight towards our next destination Mumbai.

Dinner on board.

DAY 04 (SUN) UDAIPUR
Set on the shores of the pristine Lake Pichola, Udaipur is surrounded by scenic hills and is known as the City of Lakes. The famous City Palace, a majestic white monument, has been built on the banks of this lake.

This morning we take you for a sightseeing tour of the city beginning with the City Palace and Museum. The largest palace complex in India, it is a blend of Mughal and Rajput influences. Of special note is the Crystal Gallery, a breath taking collection of crystals of Maharana Sajjan Singh. The crystal item includes tables, sofa sets, dinning table, dressers, fountains and even beds besides a whole array of washing bowls, decanters and perfume bottles. There is also an exquisite jewel studded carpet, which is beyond description.

Lunch on board.

You may get to cruise Lake Pichola to visit the marvelous Jag Mandir Palace that’s spread over four acres and noted for its marble pavilion and an imposing dome, if the monsoon God has showered enough rains to fill up the lake.

Then join in for a Gala Dinner at Durbar Hall, Fateh Prakash Palace. Thereafter, rest up as we chug along overnight to Sawai Madhopur, where you gear up for a wild treat the next day!

DAY 05 (SAT) SAWAI MADHOPUR
Sawai Madhopur, in Rajasthan, is the jump-off point to the famous Ranthambore National Park, and India’s efforts to conserve the dwindling wild cat species can be seen here.

The park is one of the finest tiger reserves in the country where a multitude of visitors are likely to spot one of these majestic animals. Once, private tiger reserve of the Maharaja of Jaipur, in 1972 the sanctuary came under the Project Tiger scheme. It covers 410 sq km and runs from the easternmost spur of the Aravalis to the Vindhya Range.

Apart from tiger you can see herds of Chital and Sambar deer and herds of wild boar, Nilgai antelope and chinkara gazelles. There are also sloth beer, a few leopards and crocodiles. Extensive bird life includes jungle fowl, patridges, quails, crested serpent eagle, woodpeckers, flycatchers etc. There are also water birds like storks, ducks and geese at the lakes and waterholes.

If it’s your lucky day, you could spot a tiger lolling around lazily in the sun, or feverishly hunting down Sambhar around the lakes! You will have ample time to try sighting them during your morning and afternoon safaris.

When you’re done with the jungle, feel free to share the spoils (of your photo-shoots!) with Hi-Tea at Sawai Madhopur Lodge, the former hunting lodge of the erstwhile Royal family of Jaipur.

Dinner on the train.

Hop across to the bar or put your feet up and relax as we take you, next, on an enchanting trip to Udaipur, the next day. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on board the train.

DAY 06 (FRI) JAIPUR
Legendary for the triumphs of its proud Rajputs, the city of victory, Jaipur, is surrounded by rugged hills—each crowned by a formidable fort—and beautiful palaces, mansions and gardens. Royal processions, in all their splendour, garlanded these palaces and forts once.

You will notice a timeless quality to Jaipur's bazaars and its people. After breakfast you will be taken to view Maharaja Mansingh’s 17th century masterpiece, Fort Amber that overlooks the Maota Lake.

Amber Fort has a sprawling complex of courtyards and halls. Its rooms are adorned with beautiful paintings, precious stones and mirrorrs. Behold the Sheesh Mahal or Hall of Mirrors, where a single lamplight reflects in many mirrors, and lights up the entire room.

En-route to Amber is the Palace of Winds, otherwise known as Hawa Mahal, known for its intricate pink sandstone carving and a beautiful view of the city.

Lunch at city hotel.

In the afternoon, you will visit the city of Jaipur, famous for the City Palace. The city has many exquisite palaces, courtyards and decorative art. Walk to the adjacent Jantar Mantar or Astronomical Observatory and you will immediately notice that it was an astronomical wonder for its time. Built by Sawai Jai Singh, it makes accurate predictions even to this day. Don’t miss the opportunity to wander around the local markets before completing your tour of this historical city.

We usher you back as we then proceed on an overnight journey to Agra.

Dinner on board.

DAY 07 (THU) AGRA
Your day will begin with the sights of the beautiful city, Fatehpur Sikri, and then the medieval city, Agra.

The fortified and the magnificent Lost City of of Fatehpur Sikri was built by Emperor Akbar in 1569 as his capital and abandoned 15 years later, allegedly due to a severe scarcity of water. You will visit the graceful buildings within, such as the Jami Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chisti, the Panch Mahal, Diwan I Khas and other palaces. It is a place where Islamic architecture fuses with Hindu and Jain decorative art. Thereafter continue your journey to Agra by bus.

Lunch at city hotel, Agra.

When you arrive at Agra, you will realize that the Mughals were not just great rulers but also great builders of their times. The Taj Mahal, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s gift to his deceased beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal is truly the world’s most wondrous monument of love and its making as historical; it took 22 years and 20,000 men to build and, the white marble was procured from 200 miles away by pressing a fleet of 1000 elephants into service.

Agra Fort, an outstanding example of Mughal architecture, was also the seat of Mughal reign and administration. The present structure owes its origins to Emperor Akbar, who erected it and added the first buildings on the eastern banks of the river Yamuna. Later, his grand son Shah Jahan added the impressive quarters and the mosque while Aurangzeb added the outer ramparts. A visit to the Hall of Public Audience and its Royal Pavilions is not to be missed.

Relax thereafter as the Train journeys overnight towards Delhi.

Dinner on board.

DAY 08 (WED) DELHI
Enjoy the breakfast on board as the sun rises over the capital of India. Our incredible journey of India comes to an end as we arrive at Delhi.

Alight at the Station in the morning enriched with the rich legacy of this land. The royal journey may be over, but the memory, we’re sure, will stay with you forever.

We hope you enjoyed the journey as much as we enjoyed taking you around. You can proceed to check-out for your respective destination. If you liked what you experienced so far, we have more such travel treasures in store for you!
